우리는 무엇을 믿고 어떻게 판단하고 있을까요? 믿음은 감정이 아니라 세상을 이해하고 행동을 선택하게 하는 프레임입니다. 인류는 오랫동안 종교, 이념, 규범 속에서 스스로 적응하고 조율해왔습니다. 기술 진화로 사회적 변화가 가속된 지금, 그 보이지 않던 질서는 인공지능과 알고리즘이라는 새로운 언어로 다시 쓰이고 있습니다.
아바타(Avatar)는 산스크리트어 아바타라(Avatāra)에서 유래해 ‘하늘에서 내려온 자’를 뜻합니다. 1992년 닐 스티븐슨의 소설에서 ‘가상 세계의 형체’라는 의미로 사용된 이후, 아바타는 네트워크 속에서 나를 대리하는 존재로 의미가 확장되었습니다. 우리는 현실에서의 역할과 온라인의 프로필, 알고리즘 추천이 만든 취향과 행동 패턴 사이를 오가며 다수의 자아와 함께 살아갑니다. 기술은 이 변화를 기록하고, 우리는 알고리즘의 외재화를 통해 또 하나의 ‘나’로서 아바타와 공존하고 있습니다.
우리는 이 시대를 살아가는 우리를 ‘알고리즘 인류’라 부릅니다. 피드, 뉴스, 음악, 쇼핑 목록, 심지어 인간관계까지도 알 수 없는 알고리즘의 계산을 거쳐서 우리에게 도달합니다. 과거에는 공동체의 세계관을 서사로 엮어냈지만, 이제는 시간, 추천, 조회수와 같은 수학적 서사로 우리의 현실감이 편집됩니다. 믿음은 데이터가 쌓이는 방식에 따라 형성되고, 그 과정에서 배제와 보이지 않는 편향도 함께 쌓여갑니다.
퓨추라캔버스 2025 <불멸의 아바타: 알고리즘 인류>는 이 변환의 문법을 탐구합니다. 알고리즘이 우리의 관심을 수집하고, 가능성을 계산하며, 믿음의 체계를 재구성하는 시대에 우리는 무엇을 수행하고, 어디로 향해야 할까요? ‘픽셀 신념’과 ‘버그 휴먼’이라는 두 가지 주제를 따라, 현장의 전문가들이 기술의 속성을 깊이 파악하고, 그들의 경험, 관점과 생각을 공유할 것입니다. 이 여정을 통해 기술과 예술, 인간과 알고리즘이 얽히는 시대의 풍경 속에서, 우리가 어떤 존재로 다시 불멸할 것인지 각자 자신의 아바타를 그려보는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.
What do we believe in, and how do we judge? Belief isn’t just an emotion; it's the framework that helps us understand the world and make choices. For a long time, humanity has adapted and regulated itself within the orders of religion, ideology, and social norms. But today, with technology accelerating social change, those invisible orders are being rewritten in the new language of artificial intelligence and algorithms.
The word Avatar originally came from the Sanskrit Avatāra, meaning “one who descends from the heavens.” In 1992, Neal Stephenson’s novel introduced it as a figure in a virtual world, and since then, the term has expanded to mean a mediated identity, a presence that represents us in the networked environment. We now switch between multiple selves— our offline roles, online profiles, and tastes and behaviors recommended by algorithms. Technology records these transitions, while humanity begins to coexist with another self—an Avatar—produced through the externalization of algorithms.
We call ourselves in this era “Algorithmic Mythology.” Our feeds, news, music, shopping lists, and even our relationships are presented to us through hidden calculations by machines. Unlike the mythologies that once wove a community’s worldview into narrative, today’s sense of reality is edited through mathematical scripts—time, recommendations, views, and ratings. Belief is shaped by data sampling methods and consensus protocols, with exclusions and biases quietly accumulating in the process.
FuturaCanvas 2025 - Revival Avatar: Algorithmic Mythology seeks to explore the grammar of this transformation. As algorithms capture attention, calculate possibilities, and reconfigure systems of belief, we must ask: What do we enact, and where are we headed? Through the two main themes,
Pixel Beliefs and Bugged Human, experts and practitioners—researchers, curators, artists, and entrepreneurs—will examine the nature of technology and share their perspectives based on their lived experiences. Through this journey at FuturaCanvas 2025, we hope it becomes a time for each of us to envision our own Avatar—imagining what kind of existence might be reborn as revival within the landscapes where technology and art, humanity and algorithms intertwine.
